Finolhu is a resort that ticks a lot of boxes. Located in Baa Atoll, one of the most beautiful and well-known atolls in the Maldives, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it sits on a natural island that is absolutely stunning. With 125 villas, it is a larger resort by Maldivian standards, and it is very much family-oriented, making it one of the best options in the Maldives for guests travelling with children. If you want to avoid that, you better check our favorite resorts for couples and honeymooners.
But what really makes Finolhu stand out is the combination of its unique sandbank experience, exceptional food quality across all its restaurants, and a value for money proposition that is genuinely hard to beat anywhere in the Maldives. After visiting more than 40 resorts across the country, we can say with confidence that Finolhu deserves serious consideration, whether you are a family looking for the best resort for kids, or a couple seeking outstanding food and island beauty at a fair price.
In this in-depth review of Finolhu Maldives, we will cover everything from the arrival experience and villa types, to food, service, snorkeling, diving and more. Let’s dive in!
We were welcomed at Malé Airport by a member of the Finolhu team. The welcome was friendly, but not the friendliest we’ve had in the Maldives. It felt efficient rather than warm, which is always something you notice when you’ve experienced some truly outstanding welcomes at other resorts.
One important point to mention in this review of Finolhu is related to luggage. We were 34 kg above the allowance, which resulted in a 200 USD surcharge. Even though it is officially the rule, in many cases resorts or seaplane operators tend to be a bit more flexible, sometimes offering a discount or waiving part of the excess. Here, there was no flexibility at all, which came as a bit of a surprise. That said, it’s important to clarify that this is managed by TMA (Trans Maldivian Airways) and not directly by Finolhu.
We were then escorted to the private lounge at the seaplane terminal, which is actually very nice and comfortable, with a calm atmosphere and a good selection of refreshments. What we really appreciated was the very short waiting time, only around 15 minutes, which is excellent in the Maldives where waiting times can sometimes stretch to several hours.
The 30-minute seaplane journey was smooth and scenic, offering beautiful aerial views of the atolls. We arrived at the resort before 10:30am, and one very positive point is that our villa was already ready for check-in, which made the arrival feel seamless and efficient.
Upon arrival at the island, we were welcomed with a fresh coconut, which is always a nice touch. However, we did notice the absence of some small details that are quite common in resorts of this level, such as champagne in the villa or a welcome bed decoration. These are not essential, but they do contribute to that “wow” first impression.
Overall, the arrival experience was smooth and efficient, but slightly lacking that extra level of warmth and attention to detail that you sometimes get in the very best resorts.
We stayed in the Ocean Pool Villa number 219, and overall, it was a very comfortable and well-designed villa, even if it is not among the largest we’ve seen in the Maldives.
Inside the villa, the bed is huge and extremely comfortable, which is always a key element for a great stay. The indoor space feels cozy yet functional, with enough room to feel comfortable without being overly large.
The bathroom is very spacious, with both indoor and outdoor areas, which is something we always appreciate in the Maldives. It gives that tropical feeling while still offering privacy and comfort.
Outside is where the villa really shines. The terrace is large, with plenty of seating areas, making it a great place to relax throughout the day. The private pool is also very generous in size, and perfectly positioned to enjoy the sunset.
The view is beautiful, especially in the evening, but it is important to mention that it is not fully unobstructed. On the left side, you can clearly see local islands, which slightly reduces the feeling of being completely isolated in the middle of the ocean.
One of the biggest advantages of this villa is its proximity to the reef. The snorkeling spot is only about a 3-minute swim away, which is extremely convenient and adds a lot of value for guests who enjoy spending time in the water.
A small downside we noticed is the lack of luggage space. There is only one luggage rack, which is not ideal when traveling with multiple suitcases, as was our case.
Overall, while not the most impressive villa in terms of size, it is very comfortable, well thought-out and offers everything you need for a great stay, with the added bonus of beautiful sunset views every evening.
During our stay, we had the chance to visit several other villa categories, which gave us a much better understanding of the overall accommodation offering at Finolhu.
We first visited a Beach Villa (number 301), which is very spacious and offers direct access to a beautiful stretch of beach. The indoor-outdoor bathroom is particularly nice, and the overall layout feels very comfortable and well suited for guests who prefer staying on the island rather than overwater.
We also had the opportunity to visit a Two Bedroom Overwater Pool Villa (number 605), and this was clearly one of the highlights. The villa is located on the sunrise side, facing the lagoon, and the shades of blue are absolutely incredible. The private pool is huge, and the layout is perfect for 4 adults, with a central living room and plenty of outdoor seating areas.
The moment you enter the villa, there is a real “wow effect”, which makes it one of the most impressive accommodations at the resort.
We did not get the chance to visit the Lagoon Villas, as they were fully booked during our stay. These villas are similar to the Ocean Pool Villas, but without a pool, and are located on the sunrise side, facing where seaplanes land and take off.
Overall, Finolhu offers a very strong and diverse villa product, with options that work extremely well for both couples and larger groups.
Let’s continue our review of Finolhu with its stunning island.
The island at Finolhu is really beautiful, and one of the key strengths of the resort. Even though there are a few groynes and seawalls in certain areas, which are always a bit of a downside visually, the overall feeling remains very natural and tropical.
The North beach is particularly stunning. It is long, wide and very clean, with soft white sand and crystal-clear water. We especially loved the area near Palm Beach, close to the overwater jetty, where the lagoon offers incredible shades of blue.
One of the most iconic features of Finolhu, and something that truly sets it apart, is its long sandbank. This sandbank stretches all the way to Crab Shack, creating a very unique landscape that feels almost surreal. Walking along it, especially at sunset, is a really special experience.
In terms of overall island beauty, this review of Finolhu confirms that this resort delivers that classic Maldives postcard look, even if it may not be the absolute most pristine island in the country.
The food at Finolhu is excellent, and clearly one of the highlights of the resort.
Having visited more than 40 resorts in the Maldives, we have very high expectations when it comes to food, and Finolhu definitely delivered.
Breakfast at Beach Kitchen is particularly impressive. The quality of the food is very high, and the selection is generous. One thing that really stood out is the bread and pastries, which are surprisingly good for the Maldives.
Our favorites at breakfast were:
For lunch, Crab Shack is a must. Located at the end of the sandbank, it offers a truly unique atmosphere with DJ music and incredible views. The food is very good, although quite expensive. Here, it is really about the experience as much as the food.
Kanusan, the Japanese restaurant, is absolutely delicious. The beef gyozas, black cod and sprouts salad are highly recommended and were among our best meals.
Arabian Grill is also very good, even though it was probably our least favorite among the restaurants. The mezzes are definitely worth trying.
Dinner at Beach Kitchen is based on themed buffets that change every night, with cuisines ranging from Italian to Indian, Asian, seafood and more. The quality is consistently high, with Indian and Italian being our favorites.
We were on Half Board, which included breakfast and dinner at Beach Kitchen. When dining in other restaurants, we had a 100 USD credit, which was enough for a full dinner at Arabian Grill, but not enough for a full meal at Kanusan or Crab Shack.
One important detail is that this credit is applied before taxes, which makes it more valuable than it initially seems. Also worth mentioning that still and sparkling water are included.
If you are staying for 7+ nights, the Premium All-Inclusive plan is definitely worth considering, as it gives access to all restaurants and significantly improves the overall experience.
The service at Finolhu is an other area that we need to cover in this comprehensive review. It is overall very good, but not perfect. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, but there are some inconsistencies that we noticed during our 7-night stay.
At dinner, particularly at Beach Kitchen, the level of attention was sometimes below what you would expect in a resort of this level. For example, our water could remain empty for 15 to 20 minutes without anyone coming to refill it.
In other restaurants, the service was noticeably better, which shows that the issue is not general but more specific to certain areas.
Around the pool, ordering drinks could also be a bit challenging at times, as there was often only one waiter covering a large area, especially when the resort was quite busy, with occupancy between 65% and 80%.
That said, we need to highlight our absolutely amazing butler, Reema, who was one of the best we’ve had in the Maldives. Extremely friendly, very responsive and highly professional.
Housekeeping was also excellent. We never saw them during our entire stay, which means they managed their timing perfectly.
Overall, the service is very good, but with some room for improvement in consistency and staffing levels.
The main pool at Finolhu is one of the central hubs of the resort, and it really reflects the overall vibe of the property. It is beautiful, very spacious and well designed, with plenty of sunbeds and lounging areas all around. The layout makes it easy to find your own space, even when the resort is relatively busy.
What really makes this pool area stand out in this review of Finolhu is the atmosphere. There is often a DJ playing music during the day, which creates a lively and enjoyable ambiance without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of place where you can either relax quietly or enjoy a more social and energetic vibe depending on your mood.
The pool bar is also very convenient, allowing you to grab drinks easily while staying by the water. That said, as mentioned earlier in our review, service around the pool can sometimes be a bit slow, mainly due to limited staff covering a large area.
Overall, the main pool is a great place to spend a good part of the day, especially if you enjoy a bit of music and atmosphere while relaxing in the Maldives.
The gym at Finolhu is really impressive and clearly above what you typically find in many Maldives resorts. It is spacious, bright and very well equipped, featuring brand new Technogym machines, which is always a strong indicator of quality. The gym is also very well located, with beautiful views near Palm Beach, offering stunning shades of blue while you work out.
One of the standout features is the presence of a reformer pilates area, which is quite rare in the Maldives and adds a nice touch for guests who are into more specialized workouts.
There is also an outdoor gym area, which is a great addition for those who enjoy training outside in a more natural environment.
Beyond the gym, Finolhu offers a wide range of sports facilities, including:
The resort also organizes daily activities such as water polo, beach football and beach volleyball, which adds to the dynamic and social atmosphere of the resort.
In this review of Finolhu, it is clear that the resort offers one of the most complete sports infrastructures in its category.
We had the chance to try a 60-minute Balinese couple massage, and it was excellent.
The spa itself is located inland, rather than overwater, which means it does not have that dramatic “wow effect” that some Maldivian spas offer. However, once inside, the atmosphere is very calm, relaxing and well designed.
What really stands out is the quality of the massage, which was genuinely excellent. We are quite picky when it comes to spa treatments, and this one definitely met our expectations.
Another positive point is the pricing. At around 190 USD per person for 60 minutes including taxes, it is not cheap, but it is actually quite reasonable compared to many other resorts in the Maldives where prices can go significantly higher.
Overall, while the spa may not be the most visually impressive, the quality of treatments and fair pricing make it a very solid option.
Before arriving, we did not have particularly high expectations for snorkeling at Finolhu, even though it is located in Baa Atoll. However, we were pleasantly surprised.
The best snorkeling area is located on the sunset side, between villa 215 and the end of the jetty. This is where the marine life is the most active.
During our snorkeling sessions, we saw:
The corals are not in perfect condition, which is quite common in many parts of the Maldives, but overall, the reef still offers a good experience.
In this review of Finolhu, we would rate the snorkeling around 5.5 out of 10, which is better than expected and definitely enjoyable, especially considering that snorkeling was not one of the main selling points of the resort.
During our stay, we also went diving, and the experience was very enjoyable.
We got to see the usual suspects:
The dives were beautiful and lively, even though Baa Atoll is not considered the best diving destination in the Maldives compared to some other atolls.
Visibility can vary, but overall, it is still well worth doing a few dives during your stay, especially if you enjoy marine life.
As mentioned in the introduction, Finolhu is very family oriented. While it may work for couples and honeymooners traveling outside school holidays, it is not really a resort recommended for couples during peak holiday periods, as it will be very busy with families and children.
What makes Finolhu stand out in this review is how well everything has been designed with families in mind, without making it feel overwhelming.
There are so many facilities that truly make this resort a kids paradise.
The Kids Club is excellent, offering a wide range of activities and a well-designed environment for younger guests. It allows parents to relax knowing their children are well taken care of.
For older kids and teenagers, the Teens Hut is a huge highlight. It includes a pool table, PlayStation, babyfoot and other games, creating a perfect social space where they can hang out and enjoy their time independently.
The Art Lab adds a creative dimension to the stay, allowing children to engage in artistic activities, which is a great addition compared to more traditional kids clubs.
The water inflatables are also a big success, providing hours of fun in a safe environment.
Overall, if you are traveling with children between 2 and 15 years old, Finolhu is easily one of the best family-friendly resorts in the Maldives.
The atmosphere at Finolhu is quite unique compared to many other resorts in the Maldives.
There is a lively and social vibe, with music playing throughout the day, especially around the pool and at Crab Shack.
The presence of DJs adds a modern and energetic touch, which is not something you find in many resorts.
There are also regular shows and evening entertainment, which contribute to making the experience more dynamic.
One very rare feature in the Maldives is that music can go on until 1am, which gives the resort a more vibrant and festive atmosphere.
This is something that some guests will absolutely love, while others looking for total silence and seclusion may prefer a different type of resort.
When it comes to value for money, Finolhu is extremely hard to beat.
You really get a lot for what you pay, especially when considering:
In this review of Finolhu, it is clear that the resort delivers one of the best value propositions in the Maldives.
Pros
Cons
To conclude this review of Finolhu A Seaside Collection Resort, it is one of the most well-balanced resorts in the Maldives.
It may not aim to compete with ultra-luxury properties in every aspect, but it delivers an experience that is extremely hard to beat for the price.
Between the beautiful island, excellent dining, fun atmosphere and strong value for money, this review of Finolhu clearly shows why it is such a popular choice.
If you are looking for a resort that combines beauty, quality and a lively vibe without reaching extreme price levels, Finolhu is definitely one of the best options in the Maldives today.
