10 mistakes first-time Maldives travellers often make

The Maldives may seem like an easy-to-book destination, but reality is far more complex. Here are 10 mistakes first-time Maldives travellers often make.
Reading Time: 6 minutes

The Maldives is often seen as one of the easiest luxury destinations in the world. You choose a beautiful overwater villa, fly to a private island, and enjoy paradise. In reality, planning a Maldives trip can be surprisingly complex.

Many first-time travellers assume that all resorts look similar and offer the same experience. But the truth is that each island is completely different, and choosing the wrong one can dramatically impact your trip. From snorkeling conditions to transfer times, meal plans or island size, there are many small details that can make the difference between an unforgettable stay and a disappointing one.

After visiting more than 35 resorts ourselves and helping travellers plan their Maldives trips every day for years, here are 10 mistakes that first-time Maldives travellers often make and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Thinking all Maldives islands look the same

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Maldives is that every island looks like the same tropical postcard.

While the destination is undeniably beautiful, the reality is that islands vary enormously in terms of vegetation, lagoon colour, beach quality and overall atmosphere. Some islands are completely natural with lush vegetation and soft white sand, while others are partially reclaimed and have more engineered coastlines. You can see here our favorite islands in the Maldives that a truly beautiful.

You will also find resorts with visible seawalls or groynes designed to protect the island from erosion. While these structures are sometimes necessary, they can significantly affect the overall feeling of paradise if you were expecting untouched nature.

Choosing the right island in the Maldives is therefore just as important as choosing the right resort brand.

Mistake #2: Not checking if the resort has a good house reef

Many travellers imagine stepping directly from their beach villa or jumping from their overwater villa into crystal-clear water filled with colorful fish, turtles and reef sharks.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In fact, many resorts in the Maldives do not have a house reef at all, or the reef may be too far from the island to access easily from the beach.

Some reefs are also heavily affected by coral bleaching or are located in deeper water where marine life is less visible for snorkelers.

If snorkeling is an important part of your Maldives experience, it is essential to research the reef quality before booking the resort. Some islands offer spectacular underwater life just a few meters from the beach, while others require boat excursions to see marine life.

When we compare and rank resorts in the Maldives, this is always a very important criterion.

Mistake #3: Choosing the wrong transfer type

Another common mistake is underestimating how transfers work in the Maldives.

Unlike many other destinations, reaching your resort often requires an additional flight or boat journey after arriving at Malé international airport. There are three main types of transfers:

  • Speedboat transfers are the simplest and fastest option when the resort is close to the airport.
  • Seaplane transfers are the most iconic experience, offering stunning aerial views of the atolls.
  • Domestic flights followed by a speedboat are usually required for resorts located in the far southern atolls.

Some travellers end up choosing a resort without realizing that the transfer may involve several hours of additional travel. Understanding how the transfer works and how long it takes is an important part of planning the overall journey.

For instance, some of our favorite resorts like Park Hyatt Hadahaa (read our review here) or The Halcyon Private Isles Maldives (read our review here) are absolutely amazing, but would be a terrible choice for short stays as they are very far from Malé.

Mistake #4: Not paying attention to island size

Island size has a huge impact on the type of experience you will have in the Maldives.

Small islands are usually quieter, more intimate and very romantic. However, they may only have one or two restaurants and limited activities.

Larger islands tend to offer more variety, including multiple dining options, sports facilities, water activities and bigger kids clubs. They are often a better choice for families or travellers who like having many options.

Understanding whether you prefer a boutique island atmosphere or a larger resort with more facilities is an important part of choosing the right resort.

Our recommendation is always to go with smaller islands, but some travellers still prefer huge islands to have more room to move around.

Mistake #5: Booking the wrong meal plan

Food and drinks in the Maldives can be surprisingly expensive. Many travellers book their stay with breakfast only, assuming they will simply pay for lunch and dinner once they arrive.

However, restaurant prices in luxury Maldives resorts can be very high, especially for alcoholic beverages. This is why choosing the right meal plan is so important.

Options usually include:

  • Breakfast only
  • Half board (breakfast and dinner)
  • Full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • All-inclusive packages

Selecting the right meal plan based on your travel style can make a significant difference to the final cost of your trip.

If you don’t want to bother and want EVERYTHING included, then, you should go with our favorite all-inclusive resort in the Maldives, Kudadoo Private Island, where everything is included, on top of the meals.

Mistake #6: Visiting at the wrong time of year

The Maldives has two main seasons: the dry season and the southwest monsoon.

The dry season, typically from December to April, generally offers the best weather with plenty of sunshine and calm seas. This is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit.

The low season runs roughly from May to October. During this period, there is a higher chance of rain and cloud cover, but prices can be significantly lower and resorts feel much quieter.

Choosing the right month depends on whether your priority is perfect weather, better value for money, or a balance between the two.

Going in April or November is usually the perfect balance but you need to keep in mind that the weather has been changing a lot over the last few years, marking less of a clear separation between high and low season.

Mistake #7: Assuming the most expensive resorts are always the best

It is easy to assume that the most expensive resorts in the Maldives must automatically offer the best experience.

While luxury brands often deliver exceptional service and beautiful villas, price alone does not always guarantee the best island or the best snorkeling. Some mid-range resorts can have better beaches or reefs than ultra-luxury properties.

The key is to match the resort with what matters most to you, whether that is snorkeling, privacy, dining quality or villa design.

Mistake #8: Not researching the surroundings of the island

Another detail that many travellers overlook is the environment around the island.

While the Maldives is famous for remote private islands, some resorts are located close to local islands, airports or shipping channels. This does not necessarily mean the resort is not beautiful, but the surroundings may not feel as secluded as expected.

Looking at the island’s location and surroundings can help avoid surprises once you arrive.

Best example here: Gili Lankanfushi. It’s an incredible resorts, but the views nearby are unfortunately quite disappointing, particularly if you’re not informed before arriving.

Mistake #9: Choosing the wrong villa category

The Maldives is famous for its overwater villas, but choosing between a beach villa and a water villa is not always straightforward.

Beach villas often offer more privacy, direct access to the sand and lush tropical vegetation. Overwater villas, on the other hand, provide incredible lagoon views and direct access to the ocean.

Even within the same category, villa location can vary significantly. Sunrise villas, sunset villas and villas closer to restaurants or jetties can offer very different experiences.

Mistake #10: Trying to plan everything alone

The Maldives may look simple on the surface, but the reality is that every resort is different in terms of island beauty, snorkeling, transfers, villa categories and overall atmosphere.

Because of these differences, planning the perfect Maldives trip can quickly become overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors.

Working with a specialist who knows the destination well can help avoid many of these common mistakes. Experts (like us :D) can help you choose the right island, the right meal plan, the right transfer and the right villa category based on your priorities. In many cases, they can also access special offers or better rates that are not always visible online.
