Vakkaru Maldives is one of those rare resorts that manages to strike a very balanced positioning in the Maldives. Located in Baa Atoll, around a 35-minute seaplane journey from Malé, it offers a combination of accessibility, natural beauty and high-end facilities that make it appealing to a wide range of travelers.
With 111 villas, the resort is large enough to provide variety and choice, yet it never feels too big. What stands out immediately in this review of Vakkaru Maldives is how complete the experience is. From the quality of the villas to the dining, the spa, the house reef and the activities available, Vakkaru feels like a resort that has been designed to deliver consistently across every aspect of a Maldives stay.
It is also a resort that works equally well for couples looking for a romantic escape and for families traveling with children, which is not always easy to achieve at this level.
The journey to Vakkaru begins with a 35-minute seaplane transfer from Malé (even though, in our case, we were coming from a nearby resort, so we came with a speedboat). As always in the Maldives, this part of the journey already feels like an experience in itself, with beautiful aerial views of the atolls and lagoons.
Upon arrival, we were welcomed in a very warm and genuine way by the team. One of the first touches was a fresh coconut, which is always appreciated after the journey and immediately helps you transition into holiday mode.
The arrival process was smooth and well organized, with the team quickly escorting us to our villa. Once inside, we found a bottle of Taittinger champagne waiting for us, which is always a very nice detail and sets the tone for the level of service you can expect throughout your stay.
Check-in is done with your buttler in the comfort of your villa. No need to wait at reception or anything like that which can be less enjoyable.
In this review of Vakkaru Maldives, the arrival experience stands out for being both efficient and thoughtful, without trying to be overly staged or artificial. It feels natural, welcoming and exactly what you want after traveling to the Maldives.
We stayed in the Sunset Overwater Residence number 248, and it is without a doubt one of the villas that left the strongest impression on us in the Maldives.
The first thing that strikes you when entering is the amount of space. The villa is extremely generous in size, and the presence of a separate living room makes a real difference.
The bedroom itself is beautifully designed, with a very large bed and direct views over the lagoon. The overall design is elegant and timeless, without trying to be overly modern or overly traditional.
Outside, the villa really comes into its own. The private pool is very large, perfect for actually swimming rather than just cooling off. The terrace offers multiple seating areas, which allows you to enjoy different moments throughout the day depending on the light and the temperature. There is also a hammock, which quickly becomes one of those small details you end up using more than expected.
What makes this villa particularly special in this review of Vakkaru Maldives is the view. It is completely open, with nothing in front of you, no other island, no structures, just the lagoon and the horizon. This creates a real feeling of freedom and exclusivity, especially at sunset when the colors become even more impressive.
Overall, this is a villa that we genuinely loved and that we would consider among our personal favorites in the Maldives.
During our stay, we had the opportunity to visit several other villa categories, which helped us get a very complete understanding of the resort’s accommodation offering.
The Overwater Villa number 214, which represents the entry category overwater option, is surprisingly good. It already delivers a very solid Maldives experience, and one of the details we particularly liked was the shower with amazing view on the lagoon. Among these villas, we would specifically recommend number 255, as it is located just a few meters away from the reef, making it particularly attractive for snorkeling.
The Beach Plunge Pool Villa number 123 is the entry-level option on the island side. It is a very nice villa overall, with a charming outdoor bathroom, but the pool is quite small, which is something to keep in mind if having a larger pool is important to you.
The Beach Pool Villa number 162 is a clear upgrade, offering more space and a layout that works particularly well for families. The pool is significantly larger, and the overall feeling is more comfortable and functional.
The 1 Bedroom Deluxe Beach Pool Residence number 110 is one of the most impressive beach villas we have seen in the Maldives. It is extremely spacious, with a separate living room and a very large pool. The private beach area also offers a high level of privacy, making it a very strong option for guests who prefer staying on land rather than overwater.
Finally, the 2 Bedroom Beach Pool Residence number 133 is ideal for families or two couples traveling together. It offers generous indoor and outdoor spaces, ensuring that everyone can enjoy both privacy and comfort.
Let’s continue this review with one of the most important things: the island.
As a matter of fact, one of the main reasons to choose Vakkaru is the island itself.
The natural beauty here is truly remarkable. The lagoon is stunning, with incredible shades of blue that change throughout the day depending on the light. Areas like Vakku beach and the surroundings of the spa jetty are particularly beautiful and really capture what people imagine when they think about the Maldives.
Another very important point in this Vakkaru Maldives review is the sense of seclusion. You do not see any other islands or buildings nearby, which is becoming increasingly rare. This creates a much stronger feeling of being alone in paradise, which is something many travelers are specifically looking for.
The vegetation inside the island is also very lush and well maintained, adding to the overall tropical atmosphere.
If your priority is to stay on a truly beautiful natural island, Vakkaru is definitely one of the best options available.
Dining at Vakkaru is another strong aspect of the resort, with five different outlets offering a good variety for a property of this size.
Breakfast is served at Amaany and is based entirely on a buffet, without any à la carte options. The buffet is very large, with a wide selection of dishes and very good quality products. The setting is also particularly enjoyable, as you can choose to sit directly on the beach with a front-row view of the ocean.
Lagoon Bar is one of the most enjoyable places in the resort, especially at sunset. It is the perfect spot to start the evening with drinks before moving into dinner. The tapas-style concept works very well, offering a structured but flexible dining experience with a selection of small dishes followed by a main course and dessert.
Isoletta, the Italian restaurant, is consistently excellent. It quickly became one of our favorite places to eat, especially because of the quality of the pasta dishes. The carbonara in particular was so good that we found ourselves going back for it multiple times.
Vakku, the signature grill restaurant, offers one of the most memorable dining experiences in the resort. Located directly on the beach, it combines a beautiful setting with high-quality meat and fish, making it perfect for a special dinner.
ONU, the Asian restaurant, is very good, but slightly below the other outlets in our opinion. It is still worth trying, but if we had to choose, we would prioritize Vakku, Isoletta or Lagoon Bar.
One detail worth noting in this review of Vakkaru Maldives is that still and sparkling water are not included, even for guests on Full Board. House water is available at around 6 USD plus taxes per bottle.
One of the most noticeable improvements compared to our previous visit six years ago is the service.
At that time, it was quite inconsistent. This time, the difference is significant.
The staff is extremely friendly, professional and attentive. There is a genuine sense of care in the way guests are treated, which makes the experience much more enjoyable.
Housekeeping was also perfectly timed. We never had to wait for the room to be cleaned, and everything was always done discreetly.
Our butler, Bek, was very good. He was always quick to respond, helpful and easy to communicate with.
Some of the smaller details also made a big difference. Having our names written on our bikes, the beautiful bed decorations and the goodbye message written in the sand on our last evening all contributed to making the stay feel more personal.
An other area to cover in this review of Vakkaru is the snorkeling. The house reef is very easy to access and to snorkel and the experience is very good.
You can very easily spot sharks, turtles and rays and, of course, thousands of colorful fish. The coral is not the healthiest we’ve seen in the Maldives, but the fish life is overall amazing and the easiness of access is worth mentioning.
The best areas to snorkel at Vakkaru would be the blue hole (between villa 255 and the Vakkaru Residence) and when going left from the dive center’s jetty, going towards the spa. This is where you’ll see most of the action are are most likely to spot sharks or turtles.
Overall, we would rate the snorkeling around 6.5/10 in this review of Vakkaru Maldives.
The main pool is nice, but it is not one of the standout features of the resort.
One of the reasons for this is its layout. It feels slightly enclosed, and you do not get a fully open view of the ocean when sitting by the pool or swimming in it.
Another aspect is its proximity to Isoletta restaurant. While convenient, it does reduce the sense of privacy, as guests dining at the restaurant can easily see the pool area.
It remains a pleasant place to relax, but compared to the overall level of the resort, it is not the most impressive element.
The gym at Vakkaru is one of the best we have seen in the Maldives.
It is located overwater and has been significantly expanded compared to our previous visit. It is now very spacious and equipped with brand new Technogym machines.
One of the most unique aspects is the ability to see marine life while working out. It is very common to spot turtles, rays or even sharks swimming below, which makes the experience quite special.
The resort also offers two tennis courts and one padel court, all accessible free of charge, which is a big advantage compared to many other resorts where these facilities are chargeable.
The spa at Vakkaru is definitely one of the highlights of the resort.
Located overwater, it offers a beautiful relaxation area with hot and cold pools as well as a sauna.
The treatment rooms are particularly impressive, featuring glass floors that allow you to see the marine life below while enjoying your treatment.
We had a 60-minute massage, and the quality was excellent. It is easily one of our favorite spa experiences in the Maldives.
Vakkaru is a very well-rounded resort when it comes to activities.
For families, the Parrotfish Kids Club is excellent and will soon be renovated, which should make it even better.
For teenagers, the Coconut Club offers a range of activities such as table tennis, pool table, air hockey and darts, which is particularly useful during rainy days.
One of the highlights of our stay was a private movie night under the stars, where we watched Top Gun with popcorn and drinks. It was a simple experience, but very well executed and extremely enjoyable.
The value for money at Vakkaru is honestly excellent, placing Vakkaru among our favorite luxury resorts in the Maldives in 2026.
You get a very complete Maldives experience, with a beautiful island, great villas, excellent dining, strong service and a wide range of activities, without reaching the extreme pricing of ultra-luxury resorts.
Even the entry-level overwater villas are already very good and will satisfy most travelers.

To conclude this review of Vakkaru Maldives, this is a resort that delivers consistently across every aspect.
It may not try to be the most extravagant or the most exclusive resort in the Maldives, but it offers something that is often more valuable, a complete, reliable and high-quality experience.
For travelers looking for a resort that combines natural beauty, comfort, good food, strong service and excellent value for money, Vakkaru is easily one of the best choices in the Maldives today.
