We have now visited 40+ luxury resorts across the Maldives. Very few of them operate at the level of absolute exclusivity and seclusion that Soneva Secret does. This is a resort that was built around a single philosophy: privacy is not optional, it is the entire concept. Here is our honest and detailed review of Soneva Secret.

Soneva Secret opened in January 2024 on the island of Dhipparufushi in the Makunudhoo Atoll, one of the most remote and untouched corners of the Maldives. It is the fourth property from the Soneva brand, the group founded in 1995 by Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmstrom Shivdasani, the original pioneers of barefoot luxury in the Maldives and the founders of the Six Senses brand. Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani are both exceptional resorts in their own right, but Soneva Secret takes the concept to a completely different level.
With just 13 villas on a natural island, Soneva Secret is one of the most exclusive resorts in the world, not just the Maldives. Each villa comes with its own dedicated butler, a barefoot assistant and a private chef. The island is the only resort in the entire Makunudhoo Atoll, which means you have no neighbours, no passing boats from other properties and no visual interruptions of any kind. This is as close to a private island as you can get without actually chartering one.
This review of Soneva Secret will cover everything you need to know before booking, including the things the resort does exceptionally well and the areas where, at this price point, we expected a little more.
The arrival experience at Soneva Secret begins well before you reach the island. In Malé, we were welcomed into a private lounge at the airport that is genuinely impressive. Comfortable, well-appointed and calm, it is a world away from the usual airport chaos. The wait was only around 15 minutes before we were escorted to board Soneva’s own private seaplane, and that efficiency matters after a long international journey.
The seaplane itself is a real highlight of this review of Soneva Secret. With only 8 large seats, it is spacious, comfortable and feels genuinely private. The 75-minute journey over the northern atolls is beautiful, and the team onboard regularly offers cold towels to freshen up during the flight, a small but very welcome touch for a journey of that length.
The one note we would offer on the arrival is that the ground team in Malé, while perfectly professional, was not the warmest we have encountered in the Maldives. Not particularly talkative or curious, the interaction felt minimal. It is a minor point, and it contrasts sharply with what awaits at the other end.
Upon arriving at the resort, we were met by our butler Sandy and, to our genuine delight, by Akira, the general manager, whom we had previously met at both Kudadoo and Hurawalhi where he worked before. Seeing a familiar face at a new resort, particularly one as talented as Akira, immediately set the tone for what was to come.
We were escorted directly to our villa where canapés and a bottle of Gosset champagne were waiting for us. The champagne is good, but we will be honest: at the price point of Soneva Secret, we expected something a little more special, perhaps a Ruinart or a prestige cuvée. It is something the resort acknowledged themselves and mentioned they are actively working to upgrade, which we appreciated.
Our villa for this stay was One Bedroom Beach Villa number 7, and it is a genuinely impressive space that captures everything the Soneva design philosophy stands for.
The defining feature is the openness. The full-height sliding glass doors retract completely, removing any boundary between the interior and the exterior. When fully open, the villa becomes one seamless space flowing from the bedroom to the terrace, the pool and the beach beyond. It creates an extraordinary connection to the natural environment that very few resorts manage to achieve so convincingly.
What also surprised us, and something worth highlighting in this review of Soneva Secret, is that even the one-bedroom villas come with a second bedroom with its own dedicated bathroom. It is a genuinely useful addition, perfect for families traveling with two children or teenagers who need their own space without having to book a larger villa category.
The swimming pool is very nice, and the outdoor areas are extremely generous. Multiple seating zones, sun loungers at different angles, shade options and direct access to one of the most immaculate stretches of beach we have seen at any luxury resort in the Maldives. The beach in front of villa 7 is simply perfect. White, powdery, lined with palm trees, completely private.
Each villa also comes with its own gym and a dedicated spa treatment room, which means you can work out or have a massage without ever leaving your villa. It is the kind of detail that takes the villa beyond accommodation and into something closer to a private estate.
Overall, the villa is a real statement of what the best beach villas in the Maldives can aspire to, with a warmth of material and a naturalness of design that feels genuinely special.
With only 13 villas at the entire resort, we had the chance to get a thorough understanding of the full offering across the different categories.
The One Bedroom Horizon Overwater Villa follows the exact same layout as our beach villa, but sits overwater with an uninterrupted view over the open ocean. It also features one of the details that guests consistently love about Soneva: a slide that drops straight from the villa deck into the ocean. The view from this category is stunning, pure horizon in every direction.
The Two Bedroom Beach Pavilion is a massive villa positioned at the far edge of the resort, offering an exceptional level of seclusion even by Soneva Secret standards. It comfortably accommodates up to six adults across two bedrooms, with generous shared living and outdoor spaces. It is genuinely one of the most private villa setups we have encountered at any exclusive resort in the Maldives.
The Two Bedroom Overwater Sea Loft is the overwater equivalent of the Two Bedroom Beach Pavilion, and arguably even more extraordinary given that it is completely separated from the island. You need a boat to reach it, which means total seclusion from the rest of the resort. For guests who want absolute privacy, this is as far as it goes.
The One Bedroom Overwater Sea Loft shares the same separated-from-land concept in a one-bedroom format, with the same layout as the other one-bedroom categories. The combination of the slide, the horizon views and the total privacy from the island makes it a uniquely compelling option.
There is not much to debate in this section of our review of Soneva Secret. The island is stunning.
The sunset side of the island, where our villa was located, is as close to a Maldives postcard as it gets. Immaculate white sand, a perfect line of palm trees, crystal clear water and total silence. Not a boat in sight. Not another resort visible on the horizon. Just the ocean and the sky.
The sunrise side is slightly less impressive and has less visual impact but no villa is facing that side, fortunately.
The natural vegetation across the island is lush and well established. The island sits within the remote Makunudhoo Atoll, which means the surrounding lagoon and marine environment are genuinely pristine and largely untouched. It is the kind of setting that makes you understand immediately why Soneva chose this location. Among the most beautiful islands in the Maldives, Soneva Secret’s island deserves its spot.
This is without question one of the most important sections of our review of Soneva Secret, and the verdict is clear: the service here is exceptional.
The key reason is structural. At Soneva Secret, each butler is dedicated to a single villa only. Not three villas, not five, not the ten that some larger resorts ask their butlers to manage simultaneously. One villa, one butler, full attention. The difference this makes to the actual experience of being a guest is enormous. Your butler is always available, always responsive and always genuinely present.
Our butler Sandy was quite simply outstanding. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, she anticipated our needs, remembered our preferences and made herself available without ever being intrusive. It is the kind of service that you do not have to ask for, it simply happens around you. That is the standard Soneva Secret has set and, in Sandy’s case, it was met completely.
In the restaurants, the spa and everywhere else across the property, the service was consistently excellent and comfortably among the best we have experienced across our top-rated luxury Maldives resorts. Our housekeeper Babu also deserves a specific mention. Keeping a villa of this size and openness in perfect condition is genuinely demanding work, and he handled it with impressive precision and timing. He was never in the villa when we were there, and it was always immaculate when we returned.
This is the section of our review of Soneva Secret that requires the most honesty, and we intend to be direct.
At the price point of Soneva Secret, you arrive with very high expectations for the food. The culinary experience at a resort of this exclusivity should be genuinely gastronomic: precise, memorable, the kind of cooking where you find yourself reordering the same dish because it was so good. During our stay, the food across all dining venues was always good. But it was never truly memorable in that way. Nothing made us stop and consider ordering it again the following night. For a resort at this level, that is a gap worth acknowledging.
We want to be fair here. We know that the resort is well aware of this and that improving the F&B offering is actively at the top of their priority list. With Akira at the helm as general manager, someone we know personally and whose standards and taste we have total confidence in, we have no doubt that the culinary experience at Soneva Secret will reach the level the rest of the property deserves. The foundations are strong. The direction is right. It will improve, we have no doubt about it.
We did go out on a snorkeling excursion by boat during our stay, and the experience was enjoyable. The waters around the Makunudhoo Atoll are pristine and the marine environment is largely untouched, which is promising.
However, the conditions during our stay were not ideal for snorkeling directly from the resort, with strong winds and significant waves making it difficult to properly experience the house reef. We were therefore not able to give a full and fair assessment of the snorkeling at Soneva Secret in the way we normally would. What we can say is that the potential is clearly there given the remoteness and purity of the atoll, and we would not let this uncertainty put you off. If diving and snorkeling in the Maldives is a priority for your trip, we would recommend checking conditions and timing with the resort before booking.
The resort’s watersports centre is well equipped regardless, with everything you’d need for snorkeling and diving trips organised on-site, so getting out on the water is straightforward even if house reef conditions vary during your stay.
The gym at Soneva Secret is very well equipped, with brand new Technogym machines covering cardio and strength training. The equipment quality is genuinely excellent and exactly what you would expect at this level. The gym is not super big, but for a resort with just 13 villas, it is likely more than big enough.
One observation worth including in this review of Soneva Secret: the air conditioning in the gym was not performing well during our visit. The temperature consistently sat around 22 to 24 degrees, which for those of us who prefer to train in a cooler environment is a noticeable issue. This is entirely a personal preference, and many guests would not find it problematic at all. But if you are the kind of person who likes to work out at 18 degrees, it is worth being aware of.
The spa at Soneva Secret is located on the island in a beautiful treatment room setting. We had a 60-minute massage during our stay and the quality of the treatment was excellent. The therapists are highly skilled and the overall experience was deeply relaxing.
The one thing to note in this review of Soneva Secret is that the spa does not have an overwater facility. For a resort at this price point, an overwater spa would be a natural addition and would elevate the wellness offering further. What exists is good, but given that each villa already has its own in-villa spa room, the on-island spa feels like it could be pushed further in terms of design and scale.
This is the most nuanced section of any review of Soneva Secret, and we want to approach it carefully.
Soneva Secret is very expensive. That is simply a fact, and there is no point in softening it. Starting rates of over $5,000 per night place it firmly among the most expensive resorts not just in the Maldives but in the world.
Does it deliver value at that price? In terms of exclusivity, privacy and service, the answer is genuinely yes. Having an entire remote atoll to yourself, a dedicated butler who manages only your villa, an in-villa gym and spa room, and one of the most beautiful natural islands in the Maldives: those things are rare and genuinely worth something significant.
Where the value proposition becomes more debatable is the food. At this price level, the culinary experience should match everything else, and right now it does not quite get there. That gap matters when you are spending at this level, and it is the main reason why the overall value picture is not yet as strong as it could be. We are confident that will change as the resort continues to develop its F&B program.
Pros
Truly exceptional and dedicated butler service, one butler per villa only
One of the most beautiful and untouched natural islands in the Maldives
Extraordinary level of privacy and seclusion, no neighbouring resorts in sight
Villas are stunning with the open concept
Every villa includes a second bedroom, private gym and in-villa spa room
Cons
To conclude this review of Soneva Secret: this is a resort operating at a genuinely extraordinary level in almost every respect. The island is among the finest in the country, the service is some of the best we have experienced across 42 Maldives stays, the villas are exceptional in their design and concept, and the level of privacy and exclusivity is simply unmatched.
The one area where Soneva Secret has not yet reached the heights of everything around it is the food. At this price, the culinary experience needs to be as memorable as the rest of the stay, and it is not quite there yet. But we know the team is working on it, and with Akira leading the property, we have complete confidence that this will be addressed.
For travelers looking for the most exclusive resort in the Maldives where privacy is the absolute priority, Soneva Secret is in a category of its own. Just make sure you stay long enough to do it justice.
