The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands opened in 2021 and immediately positioned itself as one of the most design-forward luxury resorts in the Maldives. Spread across three interconnected artificial islands in the Fari Islands archipelago within the North Malé Atoll, the property covers 13 hectares and offers 100 villas, all with private infinity pools and dedicated butler service.
The architecture, the final Maldives commission from the late Kerry Hill, is genuinely distinctive: circular pavilions, clean lines and a modern aesthetic that deliberately avoids the barefoot tropical cliché that many resorts lean into.
Seven restaurants and bars, a Forbes Five-Star rated spa, a well-equipped gym, a kids club, a teenagers club and a full range of water sports facilities round out the offering. On paper, our review of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives looks impressive, and in many ways the reality matches that expectation. But as always, there are nuances worth knowing before you book.
The transfer to The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is one of the best arrival experiences we have had at any luxury resort in the Maldives. The speedboat itself is a step above what most resorts offer: comfortable, well-appointed, with snacks served during the 45-minute journey. It sets the tone immediately.
Upon docking, our butler was already waiting for us on the jetty, and we were escorted directly to our villa without any detour through a reception lobby. The check-in formalities were handled in the villa itself, which is always the right approach at this level.
Waiting for us inside was a bottle of Ruinart champagne, a selection of snacks, and a very thoughtful touch: our company logo crafted in chocolate. It is the kind of personalised detail that takes real effort to organise and it made an immediate impression. The arrival experience at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is genuinely one of the best we have experienced across all our luxury Maldives resort stays.
We stayed in Ocean Pool Villa number 336, and it is a very strong villa by any standard. The design is clean and minimalist, with a layout that makes excellent use of the space available. The bed is extremely comfortable, the storage space for luggage is generous and well thought through, and there are both indoor and outdoor showers, which we always appreciate.
The standout feature is the view. Completely uninterrupted ocean views from the bedroom, the terrace and the pool. There is nothing in front of you except open water and the horizon, which gives the villa a real sense of freedom. The private infinity pool flows naturally into the ocean view, making it one of the more photogenic overwater setups we have seen among the best overwater villas in the Maldives.
During our stay at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives we visited several other villa categories, which gave us a thorough understanding of the full accommodation offering.
Lagoon Pool Villa 317 follows exactly the same layout and footprint as our Ocean Pool Villa, the only difference being the view. And this is actually an important distinction. Personally, we have a preference for the Lagoon Pool Villa, because the shades of blue in front are simply more beautiful. You get a stunning contrast between the clear turquoise water close to the villa and the deeper navy further out.
Sunset Beach Pool Villa 137 shares the same interior layout again, but sits directly on the beach rather than overwater. The beach access is a real plus for guests who prefer to be on the sand. However, villa 137 itself is not particularly well located within the beach category. We would specifically recommend villas 127 to 131 for better positioning and a more attractive beach stretch.
2 Bedroom Ocean Pool Villa 329 is a genuinely impressive space, ideal for families traveling to the Maldives. The living room is very large, the swimming pool is long enough to actually swim in, and the overall layout gives everyone their own space without feeling cramped.
The Ritz-Carlton Estate is the property’s most exclusive option and a world of its own. A four-bedroom private estate with a massive swimming pool, a private beach and complete seclusion from the rest of the resort. It is perfect for large families or groups who need genuine privacy and space. Nothing else on the island comes close to it in terms of exclusivity.
This is one of the most important things to address honestly in any review of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives: the island is entirely artificial. The Fari Islands were created from scratch, and that is simply a fact.
That said, the team has done a remarkably good job of making it feel as natural as possible. The vegetation is dense and impressively established for an island of this age. The sand on the beach does not have that hard, compacted feel that plagues many artificial islands. Walking or biking around the resort, you would not necessarily guess it was man-made if you did not already know.
However, and we want to be honest here, it still lacks the soul and atmosphere of a natural island. There is something intangible about a resort built on a real Maldivian island that The Ritz-Carlton Maldives cannot fully replicate. We would not place it among the most beautiful islands in the Maldives, but for an artificial island, it is genuinely as good as it gets.
Dining is without question one of the highlights of this review of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives. The resort has seven restaurants and bars, and the overall quality across most of them is excellent.
Breakfast deserves a special mention. It is one of the best breakfast spreads we have encountered at any luxury resort in the Maldives. A very generous buffet selection complemented by à la carte options, served in a beautiful setting. It is the kind of breakfast that sets you up properly for a full day on the island.
The EAU Bar is a highlight of the resort, both visually and gastronomically. Positioned as the resort’s social centerpiece with its iconic round pool jutting out into the ocean, the food and drinks here are genuinely delicious.
However, we have a real issue with the way it is managed for guests on half board. Half of the menu is simply not included in the half board plan, and guests on bed and breakfast pay exactly the same price as half board guests for those excluded items. That is not fair pricing. When you are on half board and you choose something outside the plan, you should receive a credit toward that item, not be charged the full rate as if you had paid nothing for your meal plan. It is a meaningful flaw in an otherwise excellent F&B offering, and something the resort should address.
The Chinese restaurant was the one clear disappointment of our stay. The food did not match the quality found elsewhere on the property, and we would not specifically recommend it.
Everything else, however, was excellent. The overall dining offering at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is one of the strongest at any luxury resort in the Maldives right now.
Beyond the resort’s own seven restaurants and bars, guests staying at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives also have the freedom to visit Fari Marina Village, the shared dining and retail hub connecting the Fari Islands (which also serves the neighbouring Patina Maldives). Guests are welcome to head over whenever they like and dine at any of the restaurants there, including Patina’s own outlets, with charges simply billed back to their villa. It’s a nice touch that adds variety to the dining options during a stay, particularly for guests who want a change of scenery or a different style of cuisine partway through their trip.
If there is one area where The Ritz-Carlton Maldives truly excels in our review, it is the service. The team here is exceptional across the board: attentive, professional, warm and genuinely friendly without being formal or robotic.
Our butler, Aslam, deserves a specific mention. He was one of the better butlers we have had across all our Maldives stays. Responsive, human, proactive without being intrusive, and genuinely invested in making our stay as smooth as possible. The entire team had that same energy, from the restaurant staff to the beach attendants. It is the kind of service that reminds you of what the best luxury resorts in the Maldives can deliver when everything clicks into place.
This is the section of our review of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives where we need to be most direct. If snorkeling is a priority for your Maldives holiday, this resort is not the right choice.
There is very little reef to speak of, and what exists is not particularly impressive. The underwater experience here simply does not compare to what you find at properties like Park Hyatt Hadahaa or Anantara Kihavah, which sit on or near some of the best reefs in the country.
We also looked into diving during our stay. At $300 per dive, it is one of the most expensive diving we have come across in the Maldives, even when compared to other top luxury diving resorts. We ultimately chose not to dive, as that price point is simply not justifiable regardless of how good the overall resort is.
The main pool at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is the EAU Bar pool, and it is genuinely beautiful. Its distinctive round shape and position extending out over the ocean make it one of the more memorable pool designs we have seen at any Maldives resort. It is a great social spot, particularly in the late afternoon when the light over the water is at its best.
The gym at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is excellent. Well-equipped with LifeFitness machines across cardio and weights, it is maintained to a high standard and has everything you need for a serious workout during your stay.
Beyond the gym, the sport facilities are strong. There is a padel court and a tennis court, both available to guests on a complimentary basis, which is a meaningful detail. Many resorts charge for court access, so having it included is something we always appreciate and recommend flagging when comparing options. There is also an outdoor games and activities area rounding out the sport offering nicely.
The spa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives has a strong reputation, and having experienced a 60-minute signature massage there, we can confirm it is deserved. The treatment itself was excellent, and the massage beds are among the most comfortable we have encountered anywhere.
The treatment rooms are spacious, though they are on the darker side, which may not suit everyone but does create a deeply calming atmosphere. Overall it is a very high quality spa experience and a genuine asset to the resort.
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is a great option for people looking for family resorts in the Maldives at this level of luxury. The kids club caters to children from 4 to 12 years old and offers a wide range of structured activities alongside a well-designed outdoor play area.
The teenagers club is equally well thought through, with table tennis, PlayStation and other activities that keep older children engaged. For families traveling with children of different ages, the resort handles the balance well.
This is perhaps the most nuanced part of our review of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives. The resort is excellent in many ways, but value for money is a mixed picture.
The accommodation itself is reasonably priced within the luxury Maldives market. Where things become harder to justify is the cost of extras once you are on the island. At $300 per dive, the diving is simply overpriced by any benchmark. The EAU Bar half board issue we mentioned in the dining section adds further frustration. These are not small details: they are the kinds of extras that add up quickly and leave guests feeling that the resort is extracting value rather than delivering it.
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives can absolutely do better on this front, and it would make a genuinely excellent resort even more recommendable.

But it is not a resort for everyone. If snorkeling matters to you, look elsewhere. If you want the feeling of a natural Maldivian island, look elsewhere. And if you are sensitive to on-island pricing practices, go in with your eyes open.
For the right traveler, particularly couples who prioritize design, service and dining, and families who need strong kids facilities, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is a genuinely excellent choice and one we are happy to recommend.
