Veligandu Maldives Resort Island is one of those resorts that, after visiting more than 40 properties across the Maldives, genuinely surprised us. In this review of Veligandu, we will go through every aspect of our stay in detail, from arrival to villas, restaurants, snorkeling, service and overall experience. Our goal is to give you a complete, honest and very practical perspective so you can decide if this resort is the right fit for your next Maldives holiday.
If you are looking for a resort that delivers a true Maldivian experience without breaking the bank, this Veligandu review will clearly show why it deserves a top spot on your shortlist.

Originally opened back in the 1980s, Veligandu Maldives Resort Island has just gone through a massive 2-year renovation, during which the resort built brand new overwater villas and significantly upgraded several other parts of the island. The result is a resort that now combines a beautiful natural island, modern overwater accommodation, excellent service and a price tag that remains very reasonable by Maldivian standards.
Veligandu has long been one of the most popular resorts in the Maldives, particularly for couples and honeymooners, thanks to its iconic sandbank, its beautiful lagoon and one of the most generous all-inclusive offerings you’ll find among the best all-inclusive resorts in the Maldives. However, what makes this Veligandu review particularly relevant in 2026 is the recent transformation of the resort.
The 2-year renovation has completely refreshed the property. The brand new overwater villas, in particular the Sunset Ocean Pool Villas, are now among the most attractive overwater villas in their price category in the Maldives. The renovation has also touched several beach villas, the public areas and various facilities, giving the island a more modern feel while preserving its natural charm.
The island can be reached either by a very short 20 to 25-minute seaplane from Malé, or by speedboat (quite a long ride from Malé airport), which makes access very convenient and stress-free.
What truly sets Veligandu apart, in our opinion, is the combination of three elements that are very rarely found together at this price point: a genuinely beautiful island, a brand new and modern overwater villa product and impeccable service from a team that feels naturally warm and welcoming.
In short, this is a resort that does not pretend to compete with the most exclusive resorts in the Maldives, but that absolutely punches above its weight on every single metric where it matters.
While most guests arriving at Veligandu Maldives Resort Island will fly in by seaplane from Malé, with a very short 20 to 25-minute scenic flight, our experience was a bit different. We arrived directly from another resort by speedboat, which is always a very practical option when combining two properties during the same trip in the Maldives.
The seaplane option remains the most popular and offers those incredible aerial views of the atolls that are part of the Maldivian magic. The short duration of the flight is also a real plus, as some seaplane transfers in the Maldives can stretch beyond 60 minutes, which can feel long, especially for guests prone to motion sickness.
Whatever the mode of transfer, what really matters is what happens when you step onto the island, and at Veligandu, the welcome is exceptional.
We were greeted by a smiling team, with a cold towel and a homemade mocktail that was genuinely delicious and refreshing after the journey. It is a small detail, but it sets the tone immediately, and you can feel that the team here genuinely enjoys welcoming guests.
The check-in is done at the reception, and not in the comfort of your villa, as other resorts offer.
We were then introduced to our butler, Hussain, who would take care of us throughout our stay. We will talk much more about Hussain later in this Veligandu review, but he made an excellent first impression, friendly, calm and clearly very experienced. Not surprising after his 12 years at this property.
The arrival walk-through to our villa was smooth, and once inside, a beautiful bottle of sparkling wine was waiting for us, perfectly chilled.
Overall, the arrival experience at Veligandu is one of the most enjoyable we have had in the Maldives. It is warm, efficient and genuine, without any forced corporate feel.
For our stay, we were staying in the very best one bedroom villa available at Veligandu, the brand new Sunset Ocean Pool Villa, number 215. After visiting many overwater villas across the Maldives, we can confidently say that this villa category delivers an extremely strong product, especially considering its price.
The villa is spacious, modern and beautifully designed, with a clear focus on maximising the connection with the ocean. The interiors feel fresh and contemporary, with a light colour palette that gives a real sense of openness. The bed is large and very comfortable, and the indoor living space is well thought out, with everything you need without feeling cluttered.
The bathroom is a real highlight, with both indoor and outdoor sections, allowing you to enjoy that signature Maldivian feeling of having a bath in the open while still having privacy. The finishings are modern, the lighting is well done and the overall feel is genuinely high-end.
Where the villa really shines, though, is outside. The terrace is generous in size, with multiple lounging areas, and the private swimming pool is large enough to actually swim in, not just dip into. This is something we always pay attention to, as many resorts at this price level tend to offer pools that are more decorative than functional.
The view from villa 215 is simply stunning. Completely uninterrupted, looking straight onto the ocean, it offers some of the most beautiful sunsets we have seen during this trip.
In terms of comfort, everything works perfectly. The air conditioning is powerful and silent, the villa is impeccably clean and maintenance is clearly well managed.
If you can stretch your budget to book a Sunset Ocean Pool Villa, do it. It is, in our opinion, by far the best one bedroom villa option at Veligandu, and one of the best value sunset overwater villas in the entire Maldives right now.
During our stay, we made a point to visit several other villa categories, as understanding the full accommodation offering is essential to give you a complete and useful Veligandu review.
Ocean Pool Villa (n°101)
The Ocean Pool Villa number 101 is very similar in concept to the Sunset Ocean Pool Villa, but with a few notable differences. It does not have an outdoor bathroom, and the terrace is slightly smaller, even though the swimming pool itself is the same size. The interior layout is comparable and the overall comfort is excellent.
The big advantage of this villa, however, is its location. It is positioned just a few meters away from the house reef, which makes it absolutely ideal for guests who plan to snorkel multiple times a day. You literally just step off your villa and you are in the water.
If your priority is snorkeling rather than sunsets, the Ocean Pool Villa is honestly an excellent and slightly more affordable choice.
Beach Villa (n°414)
We also visited Beach Villa 414, one of the newly renovated beach villas. To be transparent in this review of Veligandu, even with the renovation, the villa still feels a bit old and outdated compared to the overwater villa product. The design choices, the overall feel and some of the materials do not match the level of the new overwater villas.
If you really want to stay in a beach villa at Veligandu, we would strongly recommend aiming for the latest renovations, specifically villas 411 to 415, as these are the most updated. But honestly, the beach villas remain the weakest part of the accommodation offering at Veligandu.
In a property where the overwater villas are so strong, we would simply not recommend going for a beach villa here, unless your budget is very tight.
Sunset Jacuzzi Beach Villa (n°402)
The Sunset Jacuzzi Beach Villa 402 has a beautiful location, with direct access to a stunning beach and lovely sunset views. However, the villa itself feels a bit dated and is clearly not modern. The jacuzzi is nice to have, but the overall accommodation does not match the quality of the overwater villas.
That said, if you do not really care about the in-villa experience and are mostly going to be out enjoying the island, this villa can absolutely do the job, especially given its very nice beach setting.
Jacuzzi Beach Villa (n°420)
To be very honest in this Veligandu review, the Jacuzzi Beach Villa number 420 looks really old. The villa is dark, the design feels outdated and we would not recommend it. There are simply better options at Veligandu, even within the beach villa category.
Two Bedroom Ocean Pool Villa (n°111)
Now, this one was a real highlight. The Two Bedroom Ocean Pool Villa 111 is, in our opinion, the best value two bedroom overwater villa with private pools that we have seen in the Maldives.
The villa is very well designed, with a central living room separating the two bedrooms, ensuring proper privacy for each side. Each bedroom has its own private pool, which is a huge advantage for families or two couples travelling together, as everyone can enjoy their own personal space while still gathering together in the central area.
The space, the layout and the price-to-quality ratio are simply unbeatable in this segment. If you are travelling as a family or with friends, this villa absolutely deserves a spot on your shortlist, and Veligandu itself is a strong contender among the best resorts for families in the Maldives for guests who want quality without the ultra-luxury price tag. Note that this resort is good for families with teenagers (15+ yo) but we would not recommend it with small children as it is more adults-oriented.
The island at Veligandu is genuinely beautiful and is undoubtedly one of the strongest assets of the resort. After visiting many of the most beautiful islands in the Maldives, we are quite picky in this area, and Veligandu still managed to impress us.
The area between the main pool and the main restaurant is particularly stunning. The sand is soft, fine and pristine, with a brightness that is typical of the most beautiful beaches in the Maldives. The water in the lagoon is perfectly crystal clear, with those incredible turquoise and aquamarine shades that make the Maldives so iconic.
What we particularly loved is the inside of the island itself. The vegetation is very well maintained, lush and tropical, with plenty of palm trees creating that perfect postcard atmosphere. Walking around the island feels genuinely relaxing, and the layout has been thought out to keep that natural, tropical island feel rather than over-developing the property.
The famous Veligandu sandbank, while not as long as it once was historically, still adds a beautiful natural feature to the island and contributes to the unique landscape of the resort.
In a few words, Veligandu absolutely delivers on the dream Maldivian island image, with that authentic tropical vibe that some larger or more developed resorts have lost over the years.
Veligandu has three main restaurants and a bar, which is a sufficient offering for a resort of this size, especially considering most guests are on the all-inclusive package.
Dhonveli is the main restaurant, where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in a large buffet format. The quality of the buffets at lunch and dinner is genuinely good, with a nice variety of dishes, fresh ingredients and a good rotation across the days, so you do not feel like you are eating the same thing every evening. There is enough variety to please most palates, from international classics to Asian dishes and local Maldivian specialities.
Breakfast, however, was a slight letdown. It is by no means bad, but compared to other resorts we have visited in the Maldives, it felt a tiny bit underwhelming. The selection is decent, but the quality and refinement of certain items, particularly pastries and breads, could be improved.
Raalhu is the signature restaurant at Veligandu, open for breakfast and dinner, in an à la carte format. We had a truly excellent dinner here, with well-executed dishes, nice presentation and a good level of refinement. It is the kind of dinner experience you would happily repeat several times during your stay.
Breakfast at Raalhu is also à la carte and is included for guests staying in Sunset Ocean Pool Villas, which is a nice perk of this villa category. For other guests, it is chargeable, but it is genuinely worth trying at least once during your stay.
Madivaru is the third restaurant, open for lunch and dinner. We tried it once for dinner, and our experience was a bit hit and miss. Some dishes were excellent, others felt a bit boring or lacked execution. It is not a bad restaurant by any means, but it is probably the weakest of the three and not where we would choose to dine on a regular basis.
Thundi Bar is open all day, and for guests on the all-inclusive package, it is a great spot to enjoy snacks during the day along with unlimited drinks. The drinks selection is decent, the cocktails are generally well made and the location is pleasant. It is a typical Maldivian beach bar in the best sense of the term.
Overall, the food at Veligandu is genuinely good, particularly considering the price level of the resort. It is not a top-tier culinary destination, but it is consistent, varied and enjoyable, with Raalhu being a real standout.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most important parts of this Veligandu review. The service is what truly elevates the experience and what will make you want to come back to this resort.
What impressed us the most is how naturally friendly everyone is at Veligandu. It does not feel forced or scripted, like it sometimes does in other properties. The smiles are genuine, the conversations feel natural and there is a real sense that the staff genuinely enjoys their work and their interactions with guests. In a country where service is generally excellent across the board, Veligandu still manages to stand out.
A very special mention has to go to Hussain, our butler during the stay. Hussain is genuinely one of the best butlers we have ever had in the Maldives, and we have had the chance to be looked after by some truly exceptional ones across the years.
Hussain is always friendly, very fast to respond and, more importantly, exceptionally good at anticipating your needs and reading your habits. To give a concrete example, one day I went snorkeling, and based on my habits earlier in the stay, he correctly anticipated I would be in the water for around an hour. As I was walking back from the reef, he was already there waiting for me with the buggy, ready to drive me back to the villa. These small but thoughtful gestures, repeated throughout the stay, are exactly what a great butler service should be.
Another very special mention goes to Dion, who was honestly the most amazing waiter we encountered at Veligandu. Always smiling, with a great sense of humour and a real ability to make every interaction enjoyable. He is the kind of staff member who genuinely makes a difference in your daily experience at the resort.
Housekeeping was also very good, with the villa always perfectly clean and well maintained. The only small piece of feedback we have is around timing. On a few occasions, housekeeping rang at our door while we were still in the villa, which is a minor inconvenience. It is not a major issue at all, but timing could be slightly improved with a bit more coordination.
Overall, the service at Veligandu Maldives Resort Island is one of its biggest strengths, and it is delivered with a level of warmth and authenticity that is genuinely impressive. For guests who value great service above all, this Veligandu review confirms that you will be in excellent hands.
The main pool at Veligandu is a really pleasant spot to spend a few hours during the day. It is well sized, with comfortable sunbeds and a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
There is a light background music playing during the day, which adds a nice ambiance without being intrusive. It is the kind of music level that lets you read a book, chat with your partner or simply doze off in the sun, without feeling like you are at a beach club.
The views from the pool area are also beautiful, looking out onto the lagoon and one of the nicest stretches of beach on the island. It is the perfect spot to alternate between a swim, a cocktail at Thundi Bar nearby and a moment of relaxation under the palm trees.
It is not the most spectacular pool we have seen in the Maldives, but it absolutely fits the vibe of Veligandu, which is more about relaxing and enjoying the natural beauty of the island than about creating a flashy hotspot.
Right next to the main pool is Thundi Bar, which quickly became one of our favourite spots on the island. It is the perfect place to escape the midday heat for a while, relax in the shade with a drink and simply enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of Veligandu.
During the day, it has a very chilled and relaxed vibe, making it ideal for a casual cocktail between swims. In the evenings, the atmosphere becomes a little livelier, with live music and DJs on selected nights creating a really enjoyable ambiance without ever feeling overly loud or party-focused.
Its location next to the pool and overlooking the beach makes it a natural social hub on the island.
The gym at Veligandu is spacious and offers everything you need for a good workout, although it does feel a tiny bit old in terms of overall design.
The equipment is from BH Fitness, which is a brand we had not really seen before in the Maldives. We are much more used to brands like Technogym or Life Fitness, which are the standards in most resorts. That said, the BH Fitness machines work well, are well maintained and cover all the essentials, from cardio equipment to strength training and free weights.
For the casual gym-goer, this is more than enough. For more advanced users, the brand might feel a bit less premium than what you find in some top-tier properties, but functionally, you will not be missing anything.
In addition to the gym, Veligandu has invested in some very modern sport facilities. There is a brand new padel court and a pickleball court, both of which are covered, allowing you to play during the day even when the sun is at its peak. That said, even covered, it can get very hot during the middle of the day, so we would recommend playing earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Note that access to the courts is chargeable, at 15 USD per guest per hour, which is a fair price. For guests on the all-inclusive package, the access is included, which is a great added value, especially considering padel and pickleball are increasingly popular sports.
The sport offering at Veligandu is genuinely good for a resort of this category, and it adds a nice dimension to the daily experience for active guests.
The spa at Veligandu is located overwater, with some lovely views over the lagoon. The setting alone gives the spa a real sense of calm and tranquillity, with the sound of the water adding to the relaxing atmosphere.
Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to experience a treatment ourselves during this visit, so we cannot personally comment on the quality of the massages and therapies. However, the facilities looked very nice, well maintained and clearly designed to deliver a peaceful spa experience.
For a more in-depth review of the spa experience, we will update this section after our next visit to Veligandu.
Snorkeling at Veligandu was one of the most pleasant surprises of our stay. We were not expecting much, and we ended up genuinely impressed.
The house reef is super easy to access, with multiple entry points around the island. The current is generally very mild, sometimes almost non-existent, which makes it very accessible even for less experienced snorkelers and for snorkeling with kids. This is a real advantage compared to some atolls where currents can be strong and tricky to navigate.
The fish life is fantastic. During our snorkeling sessions, we saw many sharks, including black tip and white tip reef sharks cruising along the drop-off, several rays, multiple turtles and an incredible variety of colourful reef fish. It is the kind of marine experience that genuinely makes you stay in the water longer than planned.
The corals, however, are not as impressive as in some other atolls. They are present and the reef structure is interesting, but the coral life is not as colourful or as healthy as what you find in places like South Ari or Gaafu Atoll. This is honestly something to keep in mind if coral life is your main priority.
The best snorkeling area at Veligandu is near the end of the sandbank, where the reef life is the most active. The area close to the sunrise overwater villas is also really nice and offers a great alternative.
During our stay, we also did 2 dives at Madivaru Corner, which is one of the famous diving spots in the area. Both dives were stunning, with lots of grey reef sharks, several turtles, a few eagle rays and, of course, millions of fish creating those beautiful underwater scenes. One of the great advantages here is that the dive site is very close to the resort, so you do not waste hours on the boat to reach it. Quick boat ride, great dive, back at the resort in time for lunch.
For guests who love marine life, Veligandu is genuinely an excellent choice and offers some of the best snorkeling and diving you can get in this price range.
When it comes to value for money, Veligandu is, very simply, in a league of its own. We were genuinely impressed by the quality of the experience the resort delivers in comparison to its price.
After visiting more than 40 resorts in the Maldives, we have a very clear sense of where the value lies in different price segments, and Veligandu is one of the few resorts where almost every aspect of the stay feels noticeably above its price point.
The brand new Sunset Ocean Pool Villas, the genuinely beautiful island, the great snorkeling, the consistent food quality and, above all, the exceptional service all combine to deliver an experience that you would expect to pay significantly more for in many other Maldivian resorts.
Overall, nothing is perfect at Veligandu (except the friendliness of the staff, which truly is) but nothing is bad either (except the entry-category beach villas, which we would simply not recommend). It is a very solid 8 out of 10 on island beauty, snorkeling, food, service, villa product and ease of access, and a clear 10 out of 10 when it comes to value for money.
If you want a true Maldivian experience without breaking the bank, Veligandu is genuinely one of the smartest choices you can make. It is also a great option to consider as part of a multi-resort trip in the Maldives, particularly as a more affordable but excellent counterpart to one of the top luxury resorts in the Maldives.

Veligandu Maldives Resort Island is one of those resorts that genuinely delivers far more than what its price suggests. After a major 2-year renovation, the property now combines a brand new and very strong overwater villa product, a beautiful natural island, a great house reef and, above all, an exceptional team that takes care of you with warmth and authenticity.
Of course, it is not perfect. The entry-level beach villas are a clear weak point and a few areas could still be polished. But these small imperfections are completely overshadowed by everything Veligandu does right, and especially by the incredible value it offers.
If your priority is to experience the magic of the Maldives, with stunning overwater villas, great snorkeling, friendly service and a beautiful tropical island, all without spending the kind of money required at the most exclusive resorts, then Veligandu absolutely belongs at the top of your list. It is a resort we would happily recommend to honeymooners, couples and families alike, and one we would genuinely consider going back to ourselves.
