When planning a dream escape to paradise, a question we often get asked is, "Is it worth going to the Maldives in August?" or "Is August a good time to travel to the Maldives?"

With its turquoise lagoons, overwater bungalows, and world-class snorkeling, the Maldives is high on many bucket lists. However, August falls within the Maldives’ southwest monsoon season, raising doubts about whether this time of year delivers the sunshine you crave for your tropical holidays.

So, what’s the weather really like in August in the Maldives?

Historically, August is part of the Maldives’ wet season, which spans from May to October. On average, Maldives sees about 13 to 15 rainy days in August. But it's crucial to understand what "rainy day" means in a tropical climate like this. These showers are often short, intense bursts that clear quickly, especially outside of stormy periods. If it rains 2 min between 3 to 4am, this counts as a day of rain.

More importantly, having visited the Maldives three times in August over the past four years, for stays ranging between 14 to 21 nights each trip, we’ve experienced how surprising the weather can be. Despite the statistics, we were super lucky with the weather, enjoying about 90% sunshine overall on each visit. Even when rain occurred, it was typically after 5:30 PM or during the night, leaving the days mostly sunny and perfect for beach time, snorkeling, or any other activity.

It’s worth noting that in all of those weeks, a full day of rain was extremely rare. Most mornings started sunny and bright, with clouds occasionally rolling in later in the afternoon. Even then, the cloud cover often enhanced the stunning sunsets and added drama to the already breathtaking landscape. This is something you’ll very often notice in the Maldives. Even after a beautiful sunny day, the clouds often come in front of the sun as it sets

Is August a Good time to travel to the Maldives?

While it’s technically low season, August offers distinct advantages that make it appealing for many travelers. Resorts are generally less crowded, and rates are much lower, making luxury resorts way more accessible. If you're okay with a bit of unpredictability and want to enjoy a quieter Maldives experience, August can be a fantastic choice. We would not recommend it if you want to stay just 3 or 4 nights, as the risks may be a bit too important, but for 7 nights or more, it is totally worth going to the Maldives in August. You’ll get much better value for money and you will still have very high chances of amazing weather.

For divers and snorkelers, August can also bring excellent marine life visibility, especially on the eastern atolls, where plankton-rich waters attract manta rays and whale sharks. That makes August an ideal time for underwater exploration, even if a few clouds dot the sky.

So, is it worth going to the Maldives in August?

Based on our multiple personal experiences, the answer is a confident yes. While August does come with a higher chance of brief tropical showers, the reality is that sunshine dominates most days, and rain rarely disrupts a full day of activities. The perks: fewer crowds, lower prices, and fantastic marine encounters, far outweigh the occasional drizzle.

If you're wondering, “Is August a good time to travel to the Maldives?”—we say go for it. Pack a light rain jacket just in case, but prepare to be amazed by the magic of the Maldives even during its so-called rainy season.
